We received a newsletter, which contains the information below about county filing deadlines for Indiana property tax forms, from our friend Denise Praul at Accurate Tax Management Corporation.
Indiana counties started mailing out Form 11 notices for the 2011 pay 2012 values a few weeks ago, which are the notice of change in assessment. It is important to note that if you disagree with the new assessment, you only have 45 days from the date of the notice to file an appeal, or you’ll lose the right to file an appeal for that year.
To complicate matters even more, county governments have a few choices as to how to handle the appeal process, which can change from year to year.
- Some counties do not mail Form 11 notices:
- Appeals must be filed 45 days from the mailing date of the 2011 pay 2012 tax bill.
- Counties taking this option for 2011 include Marion and Johnson.
- Other counties mail Form 11 notices to all taxpayers, whether their assessed value has changed or not.
- In these counties, appeals are due 45 days from the date of the notice.
- In Central Indiana, Hancock County is using this option.
- The third option counties can utilize is to have Form 11 notices mailed to taxpayers whose assessed values changed from 2010 to 2011 only.
- Appeals need to be filed 45 days from the date of the notice’s mailing.
- Taxpayers that do not receive a notice in 2011 should file 45 days from the date the 2011 pay 2012 tax bill is mailed.
- Hamilton County, among others, is using this option for 2011.
